What Happens at a Dental Hygiene Appointment?

If you’ve never had a dental hygiene appointment before, or it’s simply been a while, you might be wondering what actually happens.

Will it hurt? Will you be told off about your brushing? What exactly is the hygienist looking for?

At North Lakeland Dental, a hygiene appointment isn’t about judgement. It’s about helping

you keep your mouth healthy, comfortable and feeling its best.

Here’s what you can expect.

First, we’ll have a chat

Before we do anything, we want to understand you.

Your hygienist will talk to you about your oral health, any concerns you’ve noticed and how things have been since your last visit.

If your gums bleed when you brush, you have sensitive teeth, you’re worried about bad breath or there’s simply something that doesn’t feel quite right, tell us.

And if you’re nervous, tell us that too.

There’s no need to feel embarrassed about the condition of your teeth or gums. We see people at all different stages of their dental journey, and our job is simply to help.

We’ll check the health of your gums

Healthy gums are an important part of a healthy mouth.

Your hygienist will carefully assess your gums and look for signs of inflammation or gum

disease. Depending on your individual needs, they may also take some measurements around your teeth to help us monitor your gum health over time.

We’ll explain what we’re doing as we go, so you’re not left wondering what all those numbers mean.

We’ll remove plaque and tartar

Even with really good brushing at home, plaque can build up in areas that are difficult to reach.

Over time, some of this can harden into tartar, which can’t simply be brushed away.

During your appointment, your hygienist will carefully remove these deposits fr

om around your teeth and gum line.

You may hear some unfamiliar noises or feel water and gentle vibrations, but we’ll make sure you know what to expect.

And if you need a break at any point, that’s absolutely fine.

What if I have sensitive teeth?

Please let us know.

Everyone is different, and some people naturally have more sensitive teeth and gums than others.

A hygiene appointment shouldn’t feel like something you simply have to endure. If an area feels particularly sensitive or uncomfortable, tell us and we can adapt the appointment around you.

There’s no prize for being brave!

Will my teeth feel different afterwards?

Quite often, yes.

After plaque, tartar and surface staining have been removed, many patients notice that their teeth feel particularly smooth and fresh.

It’s worth remembering, though, that the main purpose of a hygiene appointment isn’t cosmetic.

It’s about helping to maintain healthy teeth and gums for the long term.

We’ll help you look after your teeth at home

A big part of your appointment happens outside the dental chair.

Your hygienist can show you practical ways to improve your daily routine, including brushing techniques and how best to clean between your teeth.

This isn’t a lecture.

Sometimes a very small change to what you’re already doing can make a meaningful difference.

And rather than giving everyone exactly the same advice, we’ll make recommendations based on your own mouth and what will realistically work for you.

How often should I see a dental hygienist?

There isn’t one answer that suits everyone.

Some people benefit from more regular hygiene appointments, while others may need to visit less frequently.

Your dental team will recommend an interval based on your individual oral health and risk factors rather than simply putting everyone on the same schedule.

What if I haven’t seen a hygienist for years?

That’s okay.

People put off dental appointments for all sorts of reasons. Life gets busy. People feel nervous. Sometimes one missed appointment turns into a few years before you know it.

You don’t need to apologise when you come through our door.

We’ll simply start from where you are now and help you move forward.

Hygiene appointments at North Lakeland Dental

For us, good dentistry isn’t just about what happens to your teeth. It’s also about how you feel while you’re here.

So if you’re worried about sensitivity, nervous about treatment or embarrassed because it’s been a long time, please tell us.

We’ll listen, explain what’s happening and go at a pace that feels comfortable.

No rush. No judgement. Just here for you.
