What Happens at Your First Appointment as a New Patient?

The outside of North Lakeland DentalVisiting a new dentist can feel like a bigger step than it should.

Perhaps it’s been a while since your last appointment. Maybe you’ve had an experience in the past that has made you nervous about dentistry. Or perhaps you’ve simply moved to the area and you’re looking for a dental practice where you can feel comfortable and properly looked after.

Whatever has brought you to North Lakeland Dental, your first appointment is designed around one thing: getting to know you.

There’s no rush, no judgement and no expectation that you need to make decisions there and then.

Here’s what you can expect.

Before you arrive

Before your appointment, we’ll ask you to complete a medical history form through our online portal. This gives our team the information we need to look after you safely and means there’s less paperwork to think about when you arrive.

Your first appointment lasts approximately one hour and is split into two parts: time with Jess, our Treatment Coordinator, followed by a comprehensive examination with your dentist.

A warm welcome

From the moment you arrive, we want things to feel calm and comfortable.

You’ll be welcomed by our front-of-house team before meeting Jess. We know that people can arrive at the dentist feeling anxious, embarrassed or unsure, so our approach is deliberately warm, personal and unhurried.

There’s nothing you need to apologise for and nothing you need to feel embarrassed about.

You’re here now, and we’ll start from there.

First, we listen

Before we start looking at teeth, we want to understand the person behind the smile.

Jess will spend some time chatting with you about what has brought you to see us.

You might have something specific you’d like help with. You may be unhappy with an aspect of your smile. You might be nervous about treatment, or simply want to look after your teeth well for the future.

We’ll also talk about previous dental experiences, any worries or anxieties you have, and what matters most to you.

This conversation helps us understand how we can make your care work for you, rather than taking a one-size-fits-all approach.

Seeing your smile in a different way

As part of your first appointment, we may take an intra-oral digital scan.

This creates a detailed digital view of your teeth and gives both you and your dentist useful information about your oral health. We may also take clinical photographs and any necessary X-rays to help us build a complete picture.

For many patients, being able to actually see what we’re talking about makes dentistry much easier to understand.

Rather than simply being told what we can see, you can see it too.

You’ll then meet your dentist.

Jess will hand over what you’ve already discussed, including your concerns, goals and any anxieties or preferences. That means you shouldn’t feel as though you have to start the whole conversation again.

Your dentist will then carry out a thorough examination, including checks inside and outside your mouth and an oral cancer screening. Any X-rays required will be clinically assessed, and we’ll explain what we find in clear, straightforward language.

And please remember: this isn’t a test.

We’re not here to tell you off about what you should have done in the past. We’re here to understand where things are today and help you decide what, if anything, you’d like to do next.

What happens if you need treatment?

Sometimes things are relatively straightforward and we can talk through your options during your appointment.

For more complex situations, your dentist may want some time to carefully review everything before making recommendations. If that’s the case, we’ll arrange a follow-up appointment where we can take you through the different options properly.

We believe that matters.

You should understand what we’ve found, what your options are, why we might recommend something and what it will cost before deciding how you’d like to proceed.

There is no hard sell and no pressure to make a decision before you’re ready. That approach is central to how we care for people at North Lakeland Dental.

What if I’m nervous about coming?

Please tell us.

Dental anxiety is incredibly common, and you certainly won’t be the first person to walk through our doors feeling nervous.

Sometimes simply knowing what is going to happen makes a big difference. We’ll explain things as we go, listen to what you’re comfortable with and give you the time you need.

Our aim isn’t just to look after your teeth. It’s to create an experience where you feel safe, listened to and genuinely cared for.

Your first appointment is really a conversation

Of course, we’ll examine your teeth and assess your oral health.

But your first visit is about much more than that.

It’s our opportunity to get to know you, understand what matters to you and begin building a relationship that we hope will last for many years.

So whether you’re completely comfortable at the dentist or haven’t stepped inside a dental practice for a long time, you’re welcome here.

No rush. No judgement. Just here for you.
